why we like it: It is easy to like a place with fossilized dinosaurs, wooly mammoths and sea creatures, glow-in-the dark rocks and treasures from millions of years ago. The museum also set up a fun, interactive kids center.
location: The 3rd Floor of the O’Harra Building, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, 501 E. Saint Joseph Street, Rapid City, South Dakota
hours: Summer Hours (beginning Memorial Day) are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday
Winter Hours (beginning Labor Day) are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday
They are closed most national holidays.
cost: FREE (but there is an opportunity to donate). They also have a really neat gift shop!
what the locals know: After you experience the museum, eat at Sumo Japanese Kitchen, which is located nearby. They have great kids bowls! They are only open Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
